What is hunger?  According to the "Household Food Security in the U.S.," USDA, 2003... HUNGER is "the uneasy or painful sensation caused by a lack of food."  Statistics measure hunger by the availability and access to food at all times... recorded as food security and food insecurity.

  • Over 3.1 million people in Texas don't always know where they will get the groceries or money for their next meal
  • Approximately 874,000 Texans may suffer from outright hunger
  • An estimate of almost 1/4 of Texas children (over 1.4 million) live in food insecure households
  • Texas has the 2nd highest rate of food insecurity in the nation

  • The average of Texas food insecurity in 2001-2003 was 14.9%. 
  • The average of Texas food insecurity in 2003- 2006 was 15.9%.
